Wheelchair Friendly Water Coolers In the Workplace

0

Wheelchair users can face particular challenges when it comes to accessing facilities in the workplace. Employees who use wheelchairs need to easily move around the office without having to worry about obstacles like parking, doorways, stairs and the inability to access certain services.

Roughly 2% of the United Kingdom population are wheelchair bound. It may seem a small percentage, however, this makes up approximately 1.2 million people who face an uphill battle every day when it comes to less than adequate facilities.

Adapting the office space with improved access can make a huge difference in how a wheelchair wielding employee preforms and feels at their workplace. Change in this work space mentality is especially important when it comes to accessing necessities like water, whether it comes from the taps, drinking water fountains or water coolers.

Common issues that are experienced by wheelchair users with drinking fountains and water coolers in the workplace include:

  • The water dispenser being too low or high which creates discomfort when drastically adjusting position
  • Lack of practical knee or toe clearance to get close enough to the water dispenser
  • Inability to easily to manoeuvre around the dispenser to find the correct position to access the water stream
