The United Nations’ World Water Day is coming up in a few days. This important day promotes access to clean drinking water for everyone across the globe. Each year events are organised on 22 March to increase people’s awareness of the importance of water in the environment, agriculture, health as well as trade.
Worldwide, 783 million people do not have access to clean and safe drinking water. This translates to one in nine people who are not able to access safe and clean water which is an alarming figure when you think about it.
Events that take place during World Water Day includes visual art, theatrical and musical celebrations of water. Sports competitions are also held which includes the likes of swimming as well as local river and lake excursions. Campaigns and fund raising events are also held to raise money for ways to improve clean water access rates as well as promote awareness of clean water by protecting worldwide water sources.
As part of the Agenda 21, World Water Day was created as part of a worldwide plan for areas where human activities affect the environment. In December 1992, the United Nations’ General Assembly adopted a resolution declaring that 22 March would be World Water Day for the rest of the years to come. Developed and developing countries alike were encouraged to engage in activities to highlight international needs for water. Ultimately, leading to the first Word Water Day being held in 1992.
Here at Pressure Coolers, we recognise the importance of the need to promote both access and preservation of clean drinking water for all people across the globe. We see World Water Day as a positive step towards the realisation of this.
