Most of us are well aware of the benefits of drinking water. Getting enough H2O helps your body filter out waste and toxins, boosts your metabolism and improves your health in general. As an added bonus, water also helps you to maintain a healthy body weight, which reduces the risk of developing conditions such as fatty liver disease, heart disease or diabetes.
It’s not just the amount of water that you drink, but when you drink it that makes a difference. There are certain peak times during the day when you will get the most from that glass of H2O.
These peak times to drink water:
- A glass of water first thing in the morning wakes up or “turns on” your system. It’s a healthy start to your day and provides a little boost of energy. However, this doesn’t mean you should skip your morning coffee; just make sure you have a glass of pure H2O beforehand. For added benefits, try adding a slice of lemon to your drink. It’s packed with vitamins and minerals that will jump start your digestive system and metabolism.
- When you are feeling hungry or peckish, first have a drink of water as you might actually be thirsty. Our bodies are notorious for mistaking thirst for hunger, leading us to eat more than we need. If that doesn’t quiet the grumbling tummy, feel free to reach for a healthy snack, but drink water with it to help you feel fuller.
- Another ideal time to drink water is 30 minutes before a meal to aid digestion. It also makes you feel slightly satiated, which in turn keeps you from overeating. It also acts as a palate cleanser between courses or meals to get rid of earlier tastes.
- Ensure that you are adequately hydrated before and after working out. Working up a sweat in the gym leads to a lot of fluid and electrolyte loss. Depending on the intensity of your workouts, you may also want to add an electrolyte supplement to your water, especially during and post-exercise.
