Pressure Coolers is a specialist supplier of drinking water systems. It was previously known as Watercoolers Ltd, and started supplying watercoolers to the UK market in 1963. The company moved to Crayford in 1999 and our present location in Sidcup in 2008. It is privately owned and is not part of any larger company group.

The company specializes in mains connected water coolers and drinking fountains. It has a team of 10 engineers on the road working full time on installation, servicing and repair of drinking water systems. All staff members are fully trained in accordance with the EPDWA industry association standards.

As founder members of the EPDWA, we are subject to an annual independent audit of all company procedures including an inspection of premises and verification of our standards of customer care. We strongly believe that our success is dependant on the quality of our product and service, and to this end we strive to maintain the highest possible standards of customer service both for new and existing customers.

The Service

The benefit of having been established for such a long time in a relatively new marketplace is that our team of engineers and maintenance staff include some of the best qualified people in the industry. Whatever problems or requirements you the customer may have, we have almost certainly experienced it before in one of our many thousands of watercooler locations. We service all types of users, virtually every type of workplace imaginable, not just offices but also factories, hospitals, prisons, foundries, funeral parlours, nursing homes, farms, beauty salons, restaurants, almost every conceivable environment. We can also supply private households, although this is normally done as an outright sale rather than a rental and we do not offer free trials to domestic locations.

Water coolers – a potted history

The water cooler industry and delivery of bulk water to homes and offices started in America. It’s a big country and has large areas of arid countryside without easy access to water, so the idea of bulk deliveries developed. Various forms of porcelain and ceramic dispensers were used to pour water out from the large glass bottles in which they were delivered. Refrigerated dispensers first appeared in the early 20th century. Today almost every office in the USA  has a water cooler, and they are also found in large numbers of homes. Nobody knows how many coolers there are altogether, but estimates vary from 10 to 30 million.

Although there have always been a few water coolers in Europe, the idea really took off in the UK in the late 1980’s. Bottle coolers were initially imported from the USA, but through the 1990’s various European manufacturers emerged and since 2000 Asian machines have gained an increasing foothold mostly through of cheaper prices. Other European markets followed the UK lead and developed through the 1990’s, and today there are water cooler distributors covering virtually every town and city throughout the continent. In 2006 there are over 500,000 water coolers in Britain and approaching 3 million in the whole of Europe.

There are now more water coolers in China than the whole of Europe, and almost all Asian countries also have a cooler industry. The majority of the water dispensers in China are non-refrigerated because the people there believe that cold water is unhealthy.
