Water coolers have become extremely popular over the years. One of the main reasons being their convenience in which they can provide cool drinking water to employees. Choosing a water cooler can be quite daunting especially when you don’t know the different types of water coolers there are out there. Pressure Coolers stock a wide range of water coolers and water fountains that will be sure to accommodate your every hydration need.
So what is the difference between a mains water cooler, bottled water cooler, and drinking fountain?
Mains Water Cooler
A mains water cooler is directly into the mains supply providing you with access to an unlimited water. It is suitable for indoors and the preferred water cooler for large offices and corporate environments. This can come in either floor standing or a counter-top models.
Bottled Water Cooler
Bottled water coolers are suitable for indoor use too. This type of water coolers uses water bottles which can be purchased separately once the water has been finished, it is our most energy efficient, reliable and ergonomic cooler. It can come in either floor standing or a counter-top models, with a variety of shapes, colours and sizes.
At Pressure Coolers, we stock a range of options from small capacity fountains through to high capacity units generating 120 litres per hour. Fountains come in refrigerated and non-refrigerated versions as well. We also have a number of models that are designed to allow easy access for wheelchair users and of course we have BREEAM and WRAS approved models too!
Outdoor drinking fountains are similar to the indoor drinking fountains except they offer a long-term solution for high traffic environments. These fountains are ideal for schools, universities, parks and other leisure activities, they also do not need any cups or other accessories. They are plumbed directly from the water supply and drainage so you will never have to worry about running out or wasting water.
Both indoor and outdoor drinking fountains come in wall mounted or a floor standing models.

Finding the right hot and cold water dispenser for your environment takes a bit of thought. Do you buy or do you rent a water cooler? What will be sustainable in the long run?
Pressure Coolers are here to help you find the right hot and cold water dispenser option for your workplace.
Did You There Are Two Types Of Dispensers?
Bottled Water Cooler
A 19-litre or 12-litre water bottled sits normally on top of the water cooler. Water then flows into the cooler and is fed into separate chilling and heating reservoirs. Water is then dispensed through the appropriate taps. This is the type of water cooler you will find in most office spaces.
Mains Water Cooler
This type of water cooler is also known as a plumbed in water cooler as it is directly connected to the mains water supply. These models can have water filters installed to rid the mains water of any impurities or contaminants.
Bottled water coolers and mains water coolers also come in floor standing or counter top models. Counter top units are smaller than floor standing models, but still have the same capacity as the larger versions.
Water Cooler Temperatures
Most water coolers come in two options – cold and hot or cold and room temperature. Water coolers with hot options often maintain a temperature between 89°C and 92°C for safety reasons.
Water Cooler Capacity
Water coolers come with different cooling and heating capacities. In order to understand the capacity of a water cooler suppliers use cups per hour.
Understanding the drinking water demand of your office or staff will help you determine what type of water dispenser is ideal. Mains water coolers generally have a higher chilling and heating capacity compared to their bottle fed counter parts. But don’t be fooled by a bottled water cooler’s capacity!
Water Cooler Designs
Water coolers have come a long way from their traditional white simple design. Nowadays, you can find modern designs that come with numerous functionalities.

Drinking fountains have gained traction in the UK as they have various advantages over traditional water coolers. We have listed some of the vantage points of installing a drinking water fountain on your premises below:
Benefits Of Drinking Fountains
Reliable and Stylish
Water fountains are renowned for their reliability and ability to produce refreshing drinking water no matter the demand. They are able to withstand harsh environments without suffering wear and tear.
Low Maintenance Machines
Drinking fountains require minimal maintenance and attention. They are robust workhorses that are directly connected to the mains water supply and drainage system. Over time like any machine, they will require replacements of some parts and sanitisation.
As mentioned in the above point, they are plumbed in and require little maintenance. Drinking fountains should be seen as assets to any facility and are a long-term solution with only initial costs. Additionally, you won’t have to worry about the expense of electricity (in some models) or refilling water bottles.
Efficient And Easily Accessible
Fountains are instinctually easy to use and are guaranteed to provide drinking water to areas regularly visited by large numbers of people.

Many of us drink water from a mains supply which is safe but can often include unwanted particles such as chlorine. To improve your drinking water experience, we recommend a water filter. We have included five different water filters and their functions so you can fully understand how they work.
5 Water Filter Types
- Mechanical Filter
The main function of a mechanical filter is to physically eliminate dirt and any other particles found in the water. This is done by using a barrier. Mechanical filters are usually seen in a basic mesh filter or a large ceramic filter.
- Absorption Filters
These filters are carbon based. Carbon is very absorbent as it has an internal surface filled with nooks and crannies. This makes it easier to catch all impurities found in water. Many of the common water filters include Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) which minimises undesirable tastes and odours.
- Sequestration Filters
This filter is used to chemically separate a substance. Food grade polyphosphate is popular in water filters. The aim of this process is to keep minerals in the water.
- Ion Exchange Filters
This filter is used for the process of softening hard water which is done by replacing magnesium and calcium ions with sodium ions.
- Reverse Osmosis Filters
This filter removes dissolved inorganic solids such as magnesium ensuring that the water passes filtering out unwanted impurities.
