The four most common problems with water in the UK are taste and odour, limescale, bacteria and particulate/sediment. Check out the below to see how to identify and solve these problems efficiently.
Taste and Odour:
A funny taste in water is normally caused by chlorine. Chlorine and other chemicals are added to mains water during municipal treatment. This is in order to disinfect water and to prevent it from picking up germs during transit.
There is no real risk of consuming water which has chemicals used to disinfect it. Although unpleasant, it is not harmful to the body.
We would suggest investing in a bottled water cooler or a water filter. This means you can be provided with odourless and better-tasting water. Find out more here.
Limescale is a hard chalky deposit that forms when water is heated. It is seen commonly found on the end of taps or in the bottom of a kettle. Once it has formed it is extremely hard to remove unless you use an acid descaler to dissolve it.
There are no threatening health risks that occur when we consume limescale. Although it can be very damaging to our utensils and water pipes.
Preventing limescale is far easier than trying to remove it. By investing in a reliable water cooler or drinking fountain with a water filter you will dramatically reduce limescale build up. Find out more about purchasing a
Harmful forms of bacteria are very rarely found in mains water due to municipal treatment, however, in some areas of the UK where people use wells, streams or boreholes harmful bacteria can be found.
In extreme cases, outbreaks of E.Coli and Legionella occur when harmful bacteria gets into the water.
The main way to get rid of bacteria in water is through ultra-fine mechanical filtration or through U.V sterilisation.
Particulate / Sediment
Particulate describes solids in your water and generally falls into one of two categories: sediment and turbidity. This is not common in municipal water but in private water supply can often be found.
Particulate and sediment in water can be harmful to our health. It can also be detrimental to equipment and can block up pipes.
The best way to remove sediment or turbidity is through mechanical filtration.

Many of us drink water from a mains supply which is safe but can often include unwanted particles such as chlorine. To improve your drinking water experience, we recommend a water filter. We have included five different water filters and their functions so you can fully understand how they work.
5 Water Filter Types
- Mechanical Filter
The main function of a mechanical filter is to physically eliminate dirt and any other particles found in the water. This is done by using a barrier. Mechanical filters are usually seen in a basic mesh filter or a large ceramic filter.
- Absorption Filters
These filters are carbon based. Carbon is very absorbent as it has an internal surface filled with nooks and crannies. This makes it easier to catch all impurities found in water. Many of the common water filters include Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) which minimises undesirable tastes and odours.
- Sequestration Filters
This filter is used to chemically separate a substance. Food grade polyphosphate is popular in water filters. The aim of this process is to keep minerals in the water.
- Ion Exchange Filters
This filter is used for the process of softening hard water which is done by replacing magnesium and calcium ions with sodium ions.
- Reverse Osmosis Filters
This filter removes dissolved inorganic solids such as magnesium ensuring that the water passes filtering out unwanted impurities.
